Year in Review

Jeff Henderson, Executive Director

When I look back on the progress made by the National Plasterers Council this year, I can sum it up in one word:  Proud!  I am so proud of the hard work and dedication of NPC volunteers and leadership this year.  The Council came out of 2015 with a lot of momentum.  There were a number of projects that were being worked on behind the scenes, but they hadn’t quite been completed.  This year, those members were able to show off their work with…well, pride!

The year started with the release of the NPC’s industry leading study, “Comparison of Evaporation Reduction Effectiveness of Various Swimming Pool Covers.”  This report issued in January summarized the work performed in 2015 at the National Pool Industry Research Center (NPIRC) at Cal-Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA.  Since then, the report has been utilized by the State of California and the Environmental Protection Agency.   It wasn’t long after that and the NPC had released a newly updated version of its Technical Manual, now in its 8th edition.  The Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) of the NPC didn’t stop there.  NPC’s new YouTube channel was kicked off with technical videos by Alan Smith and Greg Garrett.  These new videos have been a great success having drawn thousands of views in their first few months.  Just recently TAC delivered again with a new technical bulletin that discusses the properties and characteristics of plaster, and how it reacts with external elements.  Let it said that the NPC has focused its energies in this area, and they have delivered.  Even so, their work is not complete.  Look for even more in 2017!

The Conference and Education Committees created a world class event for the industry at the NPC Annual Conference held last February in Ft. Worth, TX.  The event featured 18 classes, its famous auction, and an exhibit hall.  Attendance was in excess of 400 attendees and the event earned high marks.  During the conference several scholarship winners were awarded their prizes after careful review of all submissions by the Scholarship Committee.  2016 awards went to:

Emily Brewer, Aquatech Pools

Jessica Tonti, Pacific Paradise Pools

Nick Grabowski, Pure Water Pools

Maggie McKenna, Gardner Outdoor

Jessica Camacho, Superior Pool Plastering Mgmt, Inc

Alyssa Auringer, The Pool Lady

Diana Ruiz, Pioneers Pool Plastering

Zachery Preciado, American Pool Plastering

Katelyn Vaiassicca, Crystal Blue Enterprises

Expect even more from the NPC in 2017 when we meet in New Orleans this February.

The Membership Committee has much to boast of as well!  Renewal rates continue to be very strong and new members are coming into the Council each month.  In the coming months they will be working on new programs designed to take NPC membership to the next level.

Your Research Committee is working on new protocols for 2017.  Your input is always welcome as the NPC wishes to make the NPIRC available to members for research projects as well as industry needs.

Look for 2017 to be a great year for the Marketing Committee.  They have several ambitious projects underway that will drive real benefits to members and the pool industry.  From new sales collateral to improved website content, this group has been working hard, and we will see their results very soon.

Lastly, your NPC Board of Directors has undergone a few changes this year.  NPC leadership has decided to expand the number of active board seats by extending openings to the ‘next generation’ of leaders.  Like many organizations, we face an aging group and we must bring new blood into the board.  This process will give the new members a chance to learn from the veterans as they look to retire over the coming years.  I want to take this moment to thank all of those that have served and retired from the Board.  And, thank you to the new members of the Board that are willing to serve the industry:  Jonathan Dongell, Andrea Campbell, Brent Lane, Taylor White, Nadia Beane.

In summary, it should be clear that the NPC has come a long way in recent years.  The organization is alive with enthusiasm and purpose.  Each committee has marching orders and a vision.  All they lack is…well…you!  That’s right.  We can go farther and faster with your help.  So, get involved.  Reach out to headquarters and let us know you want to serve.  We’ll get you plugged into the organization.  Just ask any of the committee volunteers, they will tell you how rewarding this work can be.  At the end of the day, the word is pride.

In the meantime, thanks to all of you for your continued support!  None of this could ever happen without it!

Happy Holidays,

Jeff Henderson
Executive Director, National Plasterers Council

The NPC 28th Annual Conference, being held February 7 - 10, 2017 in New Orleans, is a must attend event for the pool professional.  With live demonstrations and product displays, enlightening education seminars and entertaining networking events, the NPC brings suppliers, manufacturers and service providers together.

The exhibits and education programs for the conference are designed to bring you the latest in technology and methods used throughout the industry.  NPC strives to bring best ways to widen your customer base and the Annual Conference is your best chance to gain this insight.  Join us in New Orleans and see what all the fuss is about!

Why Should You Attend?

Take advantage of industry leaders being in one place making decisions and having fun at the same time!  Builders, retailers, service companies, designers, landscape architects, and other industry leaders serving both the commercial and residential markets will be in attendance to conduct business, make buying decisions, see the latest trends and set the stage for the year ahead.

Plus, get this year’s rubber duckie!  For the 2016 conference you probably saw Splash T. Duck in his cowboy gear and had the opportunity to bring him home with you.  For the 2017 conference, Splash is sporting his Mardi Gras party mask and beads and is ready to enjoy The Big Easy with you!

This year, we have several new classes for you – a social media class with Pam Vinje, Marketing Game Changers for 2017, as well as a legal class with NPC Friend and Attorney specializing in construction issues, Nick Spiritos.  Nick’s class Spotting Problems & Dealing with Them Before They Get out of Hand will be a popular one!  Of course, we will be addressing two very popular issues with Greg Garrett and Alan Smith – Pool Torching 101 and Spot Etching.  For a complete list of classes, please visit the Conference page.

We have once again partnered with Genesis to bring their 2-day school to our Conference on Tuesday, February 7th and Wednesday, February 8th.  Genesis will be presenting Engineering 211:  Basic Fluid Engineering.  Every watershape requires at least a basic understanding of the hydraulic principles that make it work.  This program will provide a detailed foundation of understanding that enables the students to design better hydraulic systems. You may register for this class alone or in conjunction with NPC Conference Registration.  Register
