THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12

BASIC POOL FORENSICS (Randy Dukes, Aquavations Corporation)
Do you have concerns about pool surface issues? Identifying pool surface concerns can be complex but a few basic procedures can assist in eliminating what the problem isn’t, and identifying what the problem is. Attendees will develop an understanding for the importance of the PIE (Pool Inspection and Evaluation) Form. We will use the PIE form to gather information to assist in analyzing possible causes and remedies to cosmetic surface issues such as delamination, deterioration, and trapped moisture which can enhance surface color variations.

BUILDING PROFITABILITY THROUGH LOYALTY (Allen Schnaak, BioLab, Inc.)
The current state of the Swimming Pool industry is at a point where many businesses will be out of business in two years or less. Other stronger businesses will survive for decades to come. Which will yours be? It is a choice. Pool builders, plasterers, service companies, and retail businesses do not have to languish in despair worried about their future, if they only apply the right people, processes and products to their business formula. This session will provide essential information on how todays businesses can improve cash flow and profitability by focusing On the ‘Right Customer’, On the Right Processes, and on the Right Products & Services. No single business can satisfy every customer. However, successful businesses DO know WHO the right customer is for THEIR business and they develop both internal and external ways to prepare for and deliver success. discussions in the workshop will help attendees identify the current state of their business, how to adopt and support a desirable company culture, and how to strengthen their bond to their loyal customers.

PREPARATION FOR RENOVATIONS (Daniel Sanchez, Modern Method Gunite)
Take a look at the tools, materials, and surface obstacles before you begin your job. This Back to the Basics class will walk you through NPC preferred methods to ensure a satisfied customer.

ROUND TABLE: MAXIMIZING SUCCESS WITH COLOR with Andrea Campbell, Mesa Masterbatch, Steve Hay, Concrete Chemicals and Shawn Hays, Delta Performance
Bring your questions and be ready to engage in discussions regarding pigment. Three manfacturers will be on hand for an open ended question and answer session. Each of the presenters will have an allotment of time to share information. You should be able to walk away with answers and procedures recommended by the NPC to take care of issues you encounter with pigment.

POOL CONTRACTORS AND OSHA (CNA)

CONSTRUCTION 104: WATER PROOFING (Greg Andrews, Genesis 3)
Finishes adhered to a reinforced concrete shell or retaining wall can fail or become damaged by leaks, weeping water, efflorescence, expansion/contraction, thermal shock, and other mechanical and chemical means. The solution is not found in any single magical product – instead, it is an assembly of multiple products and layers that each have their own function but must be completely compatible with each other to ensure a long-lasting bond. This module focuses on the installation of waterproofing systems under tile, coping, plaster, rockwork (both natural and fabricated), as well as special areas such as vanishing edges and vessels adjacent to other structures.

CONQUER THE FEAR FACTOR: Glass Pool Tile Installation (David Fatula, Oceanside, and Greg Andrews, Andrews Tile)
Glass tile is one of the fastest growing market segments in the pool tile industry today and shows no signs of stopping. This comprehensive presentation will provide the builder and installer the practical knowledge to confidently execute a simple waterline to an all glass tile pool from specification to maintenance. Learn about the different glass tile types, proper substrate preparation, installation materials and step-by-step installation methods for both mosaics and un-mounted glass tile. Increase the productivity and profitability of your next glass pool tile installation with tips for cutting and installing from active tile installers and experts in glass tile installation. The presentation will include a live glass tile installation demo.

PUTTING YOUR COMPANY ON THE RADAR (Lauren Gold, Houzz)
During this session, discover how you can harness Houzz and integrated technologies to do just this: improve business efficiency, reach new prospective clients, and streamline communication. Learn how to build a compelling online presence in addition to best practices for engaging with an online community. Understand how these activities generate new business, and how to measure their effectiveness.

WHAT HAPPENED AND HOW DO I FIX IT? (Jay Eaton, Cal Plastering)
Learn proper techniques for repairing swimming pool issues including, but not limited to, rust spots, plumbing repairs, structural cracks, and pool various alterations. We will show lots of pictures and work through the issues and their resolution.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2014

DESIGN 181: MAJOR RENOVATIONS (Mike Nantz –Genesis 3; 3 hour class; Please note: This is part TWO of a 6 hour class, part one was presented at the 2014 NPC Conference, ENGINEERING 181)
Major renovation goes well beyond updating tile, plaster and equipment of an existing pool. The shape of the pool can change, elements such as a spa are added or removed and the finished product can be unrecognizable from the original. Learn how to apply design strategies and to identify architectural elements that offer creative opportunities to a holistic design approach to the swimming pool environment and beyond. This program is required for the Service Professional certification and there is also an engineering-focused presentation on renovations.

THE TRUTH ABOUT CYA (Kirk Mitchell, Kirk Mitchell and Associates)
Cyanuric acid - a stabilizing agent with no observable plaster surface deterioration. Come learn about our latest experimental investigation with plaster samples in simulated pool water with elevated cyanuric acid levels. Learn the importance of water chemistry and how the application of the Langelier Saturation Index and accompanying CYA adjustment factor can reduce pool surface problems.

PLASTERING IN EXTREME CONDITIONS (Brody Anderson and Jason Schallock, Anderson Poolworks)
Where they will discuss challenges and solutions for plastering in less than ideal conditions including weather, groundwater, building access, customer expectations and demands, finish tolerances, safety concerns, and more.

ETCHING DETERIORATION, THE POINT OF ATTACK (Alan Smith, Alan Smith Pools and Scott McKenna, Gardner Pool Plastering)
By applying industry research results from NPIRC, we will help explain the mechanisms that cause random spot etching. We will review the protocols performed and explain how they all relate to spot etching. Be prepared to explain to your customer the exact reason etchng deterioration occurs.

RISKY BUSINESS: WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT MANAGING YOUR EMPLOYEES (ADP)

PROPER TECHNIQUES ON EXPOSING AND STARTING UP POOL FINISHES (Kirt Campbell, Bakersfield Pool Plastering)
Ever wonder what's the preferred method of exposing aggregate finishes? Ever have a start up go bad on you? The NPC has recommended methods of finishing and starting up of your newly applied swimming pool finish. This class will give you tools and recommendations to get the best finish possible.

ADVANCED WATER TESTING (Jody O'Grady, Taylor Technologies)
This interactive seminar will improve attendees understanding of the advanced topics in pool/spa water chemistry including a review of chemical treatment products and why they are used. The seminar will also present information on recommended guidelines for pool/spa water parameters, common interferences in testing and how to compensate for them. We will also discuss the most commonly asked questions in testing and water balance.

HOT WATER - TOOLS TO HELP YOU AVOID IT AND MAXIMIZE YOUR ABILITY TO GET PAID (Nick Spirtos)
