It is with great sadness that the National Plasterers Council (NPC) announce the passing of Greg Garrett. The entire NPC family mourns the loss of this larger-than-life man who dedicated his career to the swimming pool industry, was a true industry unifier, and leaves behind a magnificent legacy. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues.

Greg’s dedication to the pool industry spans over 45 years. He began his career in 1969 as a pool builder in Arizona. Throughout his career, Greg volunteered much of his time to countless pool associations and committees including the PHTA-12 Standard Writing Committee, the Recreational Water Quality Committee as well as served as the Technical Advisor for the National Plasterers Council from 1990-2015. In addition, Greg also served the American Concrete Institute on the 524 Plastering Committee. Most recently, he served as a board member of the NPC.

In 2018, Greg was awarded the rank of PHTA Fellow for honoring and upholding the following values (from the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance website):

·         Commitment to helping others learn.

·         Commitment to the highest ethical standards.

·         Commitment to improving the industry’s education initiatives through leadership in industry trade and professional organizations.

·         Commitment to excellence in practice, research and education.

·         Commitment to achieving and maintaining a cohesive professional, collegial, and inclusive community.

Greg adamantly promoted higher standards in the pool industry with the NPC, PHTA, and RWQC through education, seminars, and conferences.  In the 2000’s Greg led the charge in the development of the NPRIC.  Through research and testing, Greg was instrumental in the development of the National Plasterers Council’s Start-Up Certification program.

Greg passionately shared his knowledge and experience with pool industry, traveling across the country to teach new, young, and seasoned pool professionals about the proper start-up, care, and maintenance of cementitious interior pool and spa finishes. In recent years, Greg expanded his educational offering to include troubleshooting of plaster pool finishes. His contribution to the industry will go on through the teachings, educational products, and his students.

In addition to his service to his family and his career, Greg served three years in the U.S. Army in the 101st Airborne Division.

Strong, spirited, and ever the advocate for change and improvement through education, Greg’s resounding legacy will remain a pillar of the pool industry for years to come.
